A Day at Carlsberg Brewing Plant: Exploring the Craft Behind the Brew

With eager anticipation, students from the Nath School of Business and Technology (NSBT) embarked on an enlightening journey to the Carlsberg Brewing Plant located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Our objective? To transcend the confines of textbooks and immerse ourselves in the vibrant world of brewing, where theory melds seamlessly with practice, and the art of crafting beer unfolds before our eyes..

Nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar lies the Carlsberg Brewing Plant, a beacon of innovation and excellence in the brewing industry. Led by the esteemed Mr. Manish Patel, the head of the site, Carlsberg has earned a reputation for crafting exceptional brews while upholding the highest standards of quality and sustainability.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted with warm hospitality and a comprehensive safety guideline video, emphasizing the plant's commitment to ensuring a secure and responsible environment for both employees and visitors. With safety at the forefront, we proceeded to immerse ourselves in a series of captivating presentations, each unveiling a different facet of the beer-making process.

Our journey began with an exploration of the significance of beer, tracing its rich history and cultural impact across civilizations. From ancient Mesopotamia to modern-day breweries, beer has woven itself into the fabric of human society, serving as a symbol of conviviality and celebration.

Next, we embarked on a myth-busting adventure, debunking common misconceptions surrounding beer. Through engaging presentations and insightful discussions, we unearthed the truth behind myths such as the correlation between beer consumption and health, shedding light on the nuanced relationship between moderation and well-being.

With our curiosity piqued, we delved into the heart of brewing, exploring the essential ingredients and meticulous processes that culminate in the creation of the perfect pint. Malted barley, hops, water, and yeast—these simple yet crucial components undergo a complex transformation, orchestrated by a symphony of state-of-the-art machines and equipment.

At the heart of the Carlsberg Brewing Plant, we witnessed the mesmerizing ballet of brewing in action. The journey began at the malt mill, where malted barley was crushed into grist, releasing its sugars for the brewing process. The grist then journeyed to the mash kettle, where it mingled with hot water to create a thick, porridge-like substance known as mash. This mash was transferred to the lauter tun, where the liquid wort was separated from the spent grain, leaving behind a sugary solution ready for further processing.

The wort then made its way to the wort kettle, where it was boiled with hops to impart bitterness, flavor, and aroma. After boiling, the wort flowed into the whirlpool, where centrifugal force helped to separate solids from the liquid. From there, the hot wort passed through the wort cooler, rapidly lowering its temperature to a level suitable for fermentation.

Next, the cooled wort entered the fermenting and maturing machine, where yeast was added to initiate fermentation. Here, under carefully controlled conditions, the yeast worked its magic, converting sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide while imparting unique flavors and aromas to the beer. Following fermentation, the beer underwent maturation, allowing it to develop complexity and smoothness over time.

Our visit to the Carlsberg Brewing Plant was not merely a journey through the corridors of production but a celebration of craftsmanship and passion. As we bid farewell to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and the enchanting world of brewing, we departed with a newfound appreciation for the artistry and dedication that go into every sip of beer. Until we meet again, cheers to the spirit of exploration and discovery!
