Rajarshi – the constant anchorage of Tata Group

Updated: Oct 16

Many Indian kings have been termed as Rajarshis – not only Dashrath,Ram, Krishna but also Ashoka, Prithviraj Chauhan, Ranjit, Singh, Harshvardhan.

The Raj in the word Rajarshi denotes Raja/King/Emperor/Leader/Supreme denoting qualities of resolve, determination, go-getter attitude and Rishi denotes the sage like qualities of the same person – objectivity, freedom from attachment, free from ego, unperturbed by dualities, equanimous in nature, always on the श्रेय पथ।. When it is said that Tata Group will not be legally correct and morally wrong – it is this Rajarshi quality of its leadership. Here are some excerpts from several different Tata Chairs over the last 150 years. The constant anchorage in them is this Rajarshi quality of leadership.

When Jamsetji (1868-1904) says "In a free enterprise, the community is not just another stakeholder, but is, in fact, the very purpose of its existence" - it is this Rajarshi quality of his leadership.

When Sir Dorabji Tata (1904-1932) says – “May I appeal to all who live in this land, to work in harmony and in co-operation for its general development? May I appeal to them to sink all party differences; to realise that the interests of any one set of people are closely bound up with the interests of the whole land; and that in the industrial and commercial growth of the country, the interest, both of those who adopted it, and of those who are born of the soil, will be fully served” - it is this Rajarshi quality of his leadership.

When Sir Nowroji Saklatvala (1932-1938) says – “Through the bad time and good, Tata Steel did not forsake its traditions and ideals of service, so that, on the whole, the general public never lost faith in it” - it is this Rajarshi quality of his leadership.

When JRD Tata said (1938-1991) – “That no success or achievement in material terms is worthwhile unless it serves the needs or interests of the country and its people and is achieved by fair and honest means” - it is this Rajarshi quality of his leadership.

When Ratan Tata said (1991-2012/ 2016-17) – “The pride in the Group must be that this Group must, in fact, lead the country in terms of what it does – not only in the business area – but as a Corporate Citizen and as a participant in India’s growth. Its a holistic view.We want our managers and companies to look at not only driving their businesses using every means they can to achieve their ends but in fact to do it in a way which stands out and continues the traditions that the Group has set over the years” - it is this Rajarshi quality of his leadership.

When N Chandrasekharan (2017- Present) says – “Our job is to run our marathon, not to be distracted by somebody’s sprint” it is this Rajarshi quality of his leadership.

When Sir Ratan Tata said – “May God grant that, in serving the Tatas, you will also serve India and will always realize that you are here for a much higher mission than merely working for an industrial enterprise” - it is this Rajarshi quality of his leadership.

When Ratanji Dadabhai Tata said – “ We are like men building a wall against a sea. It would be the height of folly on our part to give away any part of the cement that is required to make the wall secure for all time. That is why we and you have to use this money… to build up this great industry… And we should not think of dividends until we have done that. We hold this money in trust for you. But you yourselves hold it in trust for the Indian Nation…” - it is this Rajarshi quality of his leadership.

May the House of Tatas be blessed with this Rajarshi anchorage and leadership perenially and may it keep growing Bharat.
