Jamsetji Tata's philosophy that "the community is not just another stakeholder in business, but is in fact the very purpose of its existence" is deeply ingrained in the Tata Group's culture.
Ingraining in culture is a result of ingraining in leadership behaviour. This very philosophy is the reason behind how decision making is done at Tata Group. Blessed is him and blessed are all the Tata Group Chairmen who have the privilege to get inspired by this thought and legacy. Conscious capitalists can only bring Conscious capitalism.
The word Conscious comes into play only when we can live in the present. If the fixation is with the results, it starts taking the consciousness away. It starts making the decisions individual centric than communistic.
Man has suffered from attachment to results from time immemorial. Dhritrashtra was so attached to his son that he could allow every act, however unethical it may be. His son Duryodhan was so attached to power, that he could go to any extremes of injustice. The mighty Arjun wanted to run away from the battlefield because he was attached to his relations.
In the Ramayan, Kaikeyi was a very good and able lady, she was a warrior who saved Raja Dashrath’s life in a battle. She loved Ram and never had a thought that Ram is not her own child. Yet she got influenced by her personal assistant, Manthara. This shows that most minds, however intelligent, able and well-meaning, are susceptible and can get influenced by “not right” things. It is at this time anchorage in personal values are important. It is at this time that emotional intelligence is important. It is at this time that a person has to be reminded of प्रेय पथ or श्रेय पथ। This is why EI becomes more important than IQ. But one can’t bring this anchorage at such a time without being in anchorage all the time. This “Art of Living” is demonstrated by Tata Group Chairs.
The Tata Group at the top has been a great example of very good EI. The ability to steer towards श्रेय पथ। The ability to use the head and heart in the right manner, in the right situation, does not come by reading books and posts. It comes by being in the present, by being conscious.
Any wonder why the Group is 150+years and is robust and growing. So much to learn from their culture and leaders.
